AMALFI HISTORY Pompeii: There's no other place where one can get as complete a sense of place and scale for a Roman city. Mt. Vesuvius erupted on August 23, AD 79 preserving the city as it stood that day. Murals on the walls of homes, graffiti on streets and the lead-and-terra cotta sophisticated water system are all here as they were so long ago. Geologists believe Vesuvius has the potential to create another deadly eruption so a mild sense of doom adds an element of adventure to archaeological explorations. Spend a day at the ruins, a half-day in Naples at the National Archeological Museum, where many of Pompeii's most valuable artifacts and beautiful works of art are displayed. The ruins of Herculaneum (in modern day Ercolano), a little closer to Naples, are said to be a smaller but interesting site along the lines of Pompeii.
