A fascinating town set in an unforgettable landscape, Santa Fe is unique

There is the art scene - there are more galleries in Santa Fe than any other American city besides NYC.

The many layers of culture (Hispanic, Native American, cowboy, Georgia O'Keefe, just to skim the surface) are dazzling.

The rich and varied "foodie" scene gets big city reviews. Yet for all its sophistication and world-class accommodation, Santa Fe feels like a small town. It is surprisingly homey, but you will learn how many far-flung cultures have left their mark on the spirit of this town. It is not a glitzy city and it is full of "characters" but we think that makes it all the more appealing for the independent traveler.

  • "The beauty of northern New Mexico's high deserts and mountains enchanted artist Georgia O'Keeffe when she first visited Santa Fe and Taos, and she made this majestic landscape her home-and the subject of many of her paintings-for almost the last four decades of her life. Ah, Georgia, I thought repeatedly as I recently toured what fans like me now call 'O'Keeffe Country,' if only I could stay on as you did. Futile dream that one, but at least I got to live it for a few days. And you can, too. Although Santa Fe and Taos rank today as highly sophisticated arts-oriented communities, they prove surprisingly easy on the wallet. Except for the celebrated stars, many painters, sculptors, and other artists tend to struggle on modest incomes, I've been told. As a result, visitors can find quality lodging and dining at budget rates. For all its ritzy appeal, New Mexico counts as one of America's cheaper vacation places." James Thurston, Budget Travel
  • "Canyon Road is the heart of the gallery scene. Santa Fe has over 300 art galleries and many world-class museums located around or nearby the historic downtown Plaza. The Downey Gallery is a ‘must see’ destination for serious art collectors. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum should also be on the to-do list, for this museum is devoted to her work and others whom she influenced. The Canyon Road galleries boast a wide array of contemporary Southwestern, indigenous American, Russian, Taos Masters, and Native American Pieces." Melissa Mc Ardle, SF Examiner
  • "Painters soon discovered the clear air and pure light of Taos and Santa Fe further spreading interpretations of what makes New Mexico special. As the community of fine artists grew it attracted novelists and musicians both as newcomers and from people within the local inspired by the possibilities." KRQE.com
  • "Anyone who likes art, food, wine and beautifully decorated homes (and who doesn’t?) might want to head to Santa Fe, N.M., for ARTfeast in February. The Art of Home Tour features some of the most exclusive private homes in the area, where guests can buy the paintings on the walls. All houses on the tour are for sale and, on the Edible Art Tour, visitors can nibble as they make their way through Santa Fe’s top galleries, which will serve food right from local restaurants." Jennifer, Conline, NY Times, Feb, 2007
  • "Native Americans enlighten the area with viewpoints and lifestyles deeply tied to nature and completely contrary to the American norm. Many of the Hispanics in this area still live within extended families and practice a devout Catholicism; they bring a slower pace to the city and an appreciation for deep-rooted ties. Meanwhile, a strong cosmopolitan element contributes cutting-edge cuisine, world-class opera, first-run art films, and some of the finest artwork in the world."
  • "Like most cities of Hispanic origin, Santa Fe contains a plaza in its center. Here, you'll find tall shade trees and lots of grass. The area is full of restaurants, shops, art galleries, and museums, many within centuries-old buildings, and is dominated by the beautiful St. Francis Cathedral, a French Romanesque structure." Frommer's, "Introduction to Santa Fe"
